Add ribbon button as “Open” with drop-down options

Question

I hope this is just a simple pointer to something existing that I could not find through Google.

What our businessmen want is a button very similar to the “Open” button, which was once pressed, gives a drop-down menu with three options. I can’t figure out how to do this.

I can easily add a button. I can even add a stack of 3 "small" buttons vertically. I can not figure out the drop-down list with a big button. One of our people thought that he had done this a long time ago, but could not find any evidence to support this .;)

Can someone point me to what I missed? or will someone confirm that this is not possible?

Unfortunately, this is implemented differently than how regular buttons are added to the ribbon. I base this on the answers I received here:

It seems you need to create ASCX for this.
