Find Wi-Fi devices [stations]

Imagine that smartphones and computers have a WiFi adapter (wireless adapters), but are not necessarily connected to the network.

Is there a way to look at MAC addresses through a Linux machine?

Any ideas appreciated.

Disconnected clients are not always silent. In fact, most often, clients send directed and broadcast probe requests that look for access points to which they connected earlier, thus revealing their MAC addresses that can be displayed through airodump-ng or by filtering capture packets in Wireshark to display probe requests, This is a suitable Wireshark filter:

wlan.fc.type_subtype eq 4

Old question, but I'll go anyway.

Wi-Fi enabled devices typically send probe requests to try to find the access points to which they were previously connected, even if they are not near them.

If you are using backtrack / kali linux, try the following:

Create an alias for the wireless adapter working in monitor mode (assuming your adapter name is wlan0):

airmon-ng start wlan0

Start scanning devices and access points:

airodump-ng mon0

Access points will be listed first with their Mac addresses in the “BSSID” section, followed by devices that will have their MAC addresses listed in the “STATION” section and an “unconnected” flag under “BSSID” if they are not connected to the access point.
