Is it possible to reduce or clear the size of the global line cache?

This is related to my previous issue of freeing memory in R

and wondered if it is possible to reduce or clear the size of the global cache of lines? ... I heard that it can only rise?

If possible, how do you do it?

I do not believe that this is true. It seems like the garbage collector code marks the unused CHARSXP (individual cached character vector components) and deletes them.
