How can I speed up Emacs DocView mode?

I use a fairly standard installation:

  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (installed less than a week ago)
  • GNU Emacs 24.1

And when I open the PDF file in Emacs, it is terribly slow. There is a 2-3 second delay with a simple scroll with the mouse, a 1-2 second delay when using n , p , Cp , Cn , etc.

This is with a 20 page document. When using a 50-page document such as this one , Emacs becomes unusable (constant freezing), so the problem worsens with the size of the document.

How can i fix this?

When I started emacs -Q , the problem went along the way. I highlighted it in this line in the .emacs.d/init.el :

 (global-linum-mode 1)

If I comment on this and restart Emacs, I can scroll through the PDF files and I cannot forget about the delay of the user interface. If I get it back using Mx global-linum-mode , there will be a long lag between mouse scrolling and updating the user interface.

To disable linum mode when you are in DocView mode, you can use the following settings file: setup-linum.el You can configure by editing line number 5
