Emacs will not visit the new file, but insists on opening a similar

The problem is pretty simple, but frustrating. When I try to visit a new Cx Cf file called basis.m , emacs continues to visit a similar file called haarbasis.m , which already exists in the same directory. He continues to prompt me with similar names, and I cannot visit the new empty file. I recently installed elpy for the python IDE, if that matters.

How to make emacs not visit a file with Cx Cf unless I explicitly specify which file to visit?

elpy downloads idomenu , which in turn downloads ido . What you describe sounds like an ido described file name completion. You can disable it after Cx Cf by pressing Cf

Since Alex mentions the package line that led you to ido-mode , this answer depends on the answer to your expression below, which may be related to something that happens to you when you do Cx Cf

When I try to visit a new file ...

When your pointer / cursor is at the end of a word, ido will search for a file in the current directory with that name. It can even cross the relative path if it is configured as a file directory structure, for example. show/basis.m

Jon O comment says even if this happens Cj will create a new file for you.
