How to create beta for my Android application?

How do I pack / export an app from eclipse for consumption? Where can I download it other than the Android market? I made all the programs, but I have no idea what to do next.

Depending on whether you will be conducting a private or public beta. First things first.

You need a signed .apk in eclipse, click "File-> Export" and then open the Android folder and click "Export Android Applications"

It will guide you through the signature of your .apk. If you are going to make a private beta, you can use a different key than the one you plan to use for the Android market if you want.

If you are engaged in a private beta, you can put .apk in Dropbox or another service like this and send the link to the beta tester. You will want to make sure that they set "Unkown sources" in the settings.

If you are conducting a public beta, you can publish it on the market and just let everyone know that it is in beta.

I did this in both directions ... Having a public beta may prevent certain users from downloading the application, but you will create your place in the market. On the other hand, ratings can affect you. This will depend on whether your application is really ready for beta testing or is in alpha stage.

Hope this helps.

You should check out this great conversation given on Droidcon uk last year.

Check out the publication here . The process is not so bad. You should:

  • Create Signature Certificate
  • Assembly and export for publication
  • input
  • To distribute

If you just want to distribute testers, you can sign up with a debug certificate. Those who want to install the debugging application on their phones should go to Settings-> Applications-> Unknown sources. From there it is as simple as using adb install <path to APK> or downloading the application to a web server and using the target phone for its URL using the Android browser.

Like other markets, these days there are many, and Amazon is closest to the Android Market. Even WalMart jumped up!

The biggest pain is setting up your credentials, but that’s not very important. Just read the developer guides and you'll be posting soon.

I suppose this piece of documentation could help. It describes how to publish your .apk file outside of the standard Android Market channel. In fact, the entire “Publishing” section of the document gives you a complete overview of what you can do and how to do it.

Good luck with your application!
