Git vendor catalog workflow

Question

I have two branches in git repo master and production . The main difference is that during the production process, the supplier directory was checked and is missing in .gitignore

My problem is when I switch from production to master

git checkout master 

the entire supplier directory is unpacked.

What are my options?

Try skip-worktree '(from git update-index )

 git update-index --skip-worktree -- vendor 

When on the production branch.
See if this directory is deleted when checking the master branch.
