Is Phone Gap capable of converting a php web application to an iphone / android application?

Does anyone use PhoneGap?

I have a php application that uses ajax to get json data. This technology is called Phonegap http://www.phonegap.com/ , can it convert my php application to iphone / android application?

I know that if it is just a javascript / html / css application that does not require server-side technology, then Phone Gap is capable.

However, I definitely require Internet access and an ajax connection to online services.

Phonegap does not convert anything. You can convert your php application to iphone / android application, and PhoneGap may be part of your solution.

You will start by getting rid of all the “php” - if your “application” can work in a browser using local storage, it will almost certainly work with PhoneGap. PhoneGap also provides some PhoneGap-specific APIs that you may or may not need.

However, I definitely require Internet access and an ajax connection to online services.

Phonegap doesn't help or hurt here. PhoneGap wraps the Android WebView widget, which itself is based on WebKit, the same rendering mechanism used by Chrome, Safari, etc. If after you get rid of your “php” your “application” works in Safari and Chome, it should work like an “iphone / android application” with PhoneGap, with some tweaking to your HTML / CSS / JS to deal with with smaller screen sizes, touch screens, etc.
