Rails 4 Video Conferencing Solution / Gem / Integration

I am looking for a video conferencing option for my rails application. I am not looking for what is better or better, because I know that it’s self-confident. My needs are specific, so I hope there is a specific solution.

  • Video conferencing must be compatible for all types of browsers, so WebRTC is not an option.
  • It should also be flexible enough not to occupy the entire screen. My users will need to use a different screen space to enter information.
  • Multiple users must be able to log into one video session to create a webinar or larger conference (rather than a transaction breaker if this option is not available).

I already tried VLine, Skype and oovoo, but none of them meet the above criteria. Price is not necessarily a problem, but, of course, I would prefer something that is free or open source. I am open to creating my own if there are decent guides / tutorials on how to do this.

I noticed that other similar issues were closed, so I hope that my criteria / needs will make this a legitimate issue for the community.

Have you watched Tokbox OpenTok ?

  • Their specification 1.0 uses flash memory and supports Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari with native iOS support. Currently, you will not find a cross platform that does not use flash.
  • You can specify the size in the plugin.
  • You can allow people to subscribe to threads posted by others and share them, etc.
