The Eclipse text cursor has changed, and the editor behaves differently.

I pressed the magic button, and now my cursor (the blinking thing that shows where you are typing) has split, and now Eclipse acts like a regular text editor / like Microsoft Word. A cursor that usually looks like "|" now looks like "|" (what Wikipedia calls a " broken bar or" split rule "and not a normal" vertical bar ').

I just want to know how to make Eclipse act normally again, and what I accidentally did, I do not do it again.

It looks like you accidentally switched from Smart Insert mode to Insert mode.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Insert or click "Smart Paste Mode" in the "Edit" menu to go back.

Smart Insert is a function that automatically inserts closing quotes and brackets when you enter the opener and puts half-columns at the end of the line when you press the semicolon button (if you have a preference for this.)

Perhaps you pressed the insert key, which will change the Eclipse editor to Overwrite , and not to Smart Insert (see the information panel at the bottom of the editor) and change the cursor to a block, not a vertical line?

Update : Thanks for the clarification - see mikej's answer, which is correct. I will leave this answer if someone has a similar, related issue that I am describing.

If nothing works, restart eclipse. This is what I did!

Just double-click "Smart Insert" / "Overwrite" in the eclipse status bar

For reference, I am adding an image.

Just click

Switch the Vrapper icon on the toolbar ..

This can cause some problems like these. Because I also faced the same problem until today.

Please refer to the images below to get a clear idea of this.

Toggle Vrapper Icon

please make sure it is in shutdown mode in the status bar

@Jeremy, saying: β€œI have a vertical line with a gap in the middle of it, like a symbol over a slash,” I think you mean the β€œPipeline” symbol, the one you use to indicate β€œOR” in programming languages. As people have already said, you are in raw insert mode (unlike Smart Mode), so try Edit-> Smart Insert Mode (Ctrl + Shift + Insert by default). For more information, you can visit this topic http: // www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/t/53833/

And remember that the symbol is called the "Pipe" or "Pipeline" symbol.

I already met this symptom in Eclipse 3.7. And after I restarted the car, it disappeared.

I also had the same problem, you can fix it by pressing only the INSERT button on the keyboard (on Windows platform).

It worked for me.

or you can restart your eclipse.

On my Windows computer, I press Shift + 0, but zero should be on the numeric keypad, not on the top row.

Shift + 0 toggles my cursor.
