You can install both side by side. Then you need to create your own project focused on it for a specific version of .NET, you define this in your project settings.
Usually you need the latest SDK compatible with the version of Visual Studio that you are using. You want the ".... NET 4.5" SDK if you want to configure .NET 4.5. Do not worry that it is possible that the applications will only be for Windows 8, the description clearly says:
You can use the SDK to create applications targeted at the following operating systems: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008.
