Built-in custom styles in Microsoft Word

I am using Word for Mac 2011, and I am trying to define a custom style that I want to apply to individual words or parts of a paragraph among my document. But it seems to me that there are only whole paragraph styles. Therefore, if I define my new style, say an underlined and yellow background, the entire paragraph is directly set to this style.

Does anyone know how to approach this?

Ok, I just found out:

Select Text> Format> Style> New.

Then select โ€œSymbolโ€ instead of โ€œParagraphโ€ for the โ€œStyleโ€ option.
