Failed to import Maven project into IntelliJ IDEA

I am having problems importing any Maven projects into IntelliJ IDEA. I create an empty Maven project as follows:

$ mvn archetype:generate -DgroupId=com.mycompany.app -DartifactId=my-app -DarchetypeArtifactId=maven-archetype-quickstart -DinteractiveMode=false

Then I try to open the project in IDEA (File> Open Project, then select pom.xml ). For several minutes, the progress bar "Read pom.xml" is displayed, and then simply disappears without opening the project.

Looking at the IDEA log, I see some connection timeout exceptions, for example:

I use the latest versions of IDEA (11.1.3) and Maven (3.0.4). Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

This is a common problem with network and address resolution. In some cases, localhost may not be allowed, and this requires

 127.0.0.1 localhost

in the /etc/hosts file. Also make sure there are no other IP addresses mapped to localhost .

To fix this problem for me in 14.1.3 Ultimate I had to add

-Didea.maven3.use.compat.resolver

for VM settings for the importer under Settings> Build, Run, Deploy> Build Tools> Import

I had a similar problem with a groovy script with IDEA 12. The problem was the same as stated in @CrazyCoder. The solution was based on the fact that @kevinmrohr made it a little easier to find and configure.

To solve the problem, I edited the idea.exe.vmoptions file located in the bin directory (idea64.exe.vmoptions if you are using the 64-bit version) and added -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack = true.

Restarting IDEA and everything worked without any problems.

I am using the community version 2017.2.1 and I had the same problem, I had to change the JDM version of the maven importer to the correct version (from 1.6 to 1.8) for it to work.

I had the same problem. I don’t know why this happened, I only know how I fixed it.

I found, looking at lsof -i -P, that the remote maven server was trying to run on IPv6, and apparently IntelliJ could not talk to it over IPv6. Find out what process the port holds on your computer. On Ubuntu Linux, I ran the following commands:

ps -ef | grep idea

It is noted that there is a Java process executing the class org.jetbrains.idea.maven.server.RemoteMavenServer

I noticed pid 2772 and executed

netstat -anp | grep 2772

I noticed that pid 2772 listening on port 6942

I connected to this port:

 telnet localhost 6942 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. /home/noahlz/.IdeaIC11/config/ home/noahlz/.IdeaIC11/system

So, the Maven component used by IntelliJ works as a separate server process, which IntelliJ talks about the socket. You will need to determine why IntelliJ cannot reach this server port on your computer, that is, what other process is held on that port and / or does not send a response back to IntelliJ

Please note that the port number on your computer may vary.

I ran into the same problem. Unfortunately, none of the above suggestions helped me. In fact, when I start the gradle project from IntelliJ, I got the error message “ Connection disconnected: connect ” in the event log. I tried various parameters, such as setting -Djava.net.preferIPv4Addresses = true, fixing Windows, installing ISA client, restarting the machine, dial-up level of java-language, disabled firewall. Nothing helped.

Finally, providing proxy information in IntelliJ Idea does the trick for me.

Look for any (recently installed) applications that might prevent RemoteMavenServer from answering Intellij calls correctly. In my case, it turned out to be an online reporting x3watch : x3watch . After removal Intellij began to work normally.

Had the same problem, however the following answer fixed my problem: Maven project will not compile after upgrading to Intellij 13.1 of 12

The problem itself arose after I upgraded to IntelliJ 13.1.4, before this patch everything worked fine / as intended.

I had a similar problem on

MAC OS X

What I've done:

  • deactivated FIREWALL
  • set proxy in intellij (as described in this section)
  • set ipstack flag

nothing to solve the problem ...

what helped

  • running intellij with Java 1.6 and NOT java 1.8 (defined in / Applications / IntelliJ \ IDEA \ 14.app/Contents/Info.plist)
