SAS. Why is "January 11, 2002" == "88399" according to the documentation?

I read the date documentation , but couldn't figure out how SAS handled dates:

On the SAS website, they explain that Jan 1 1961 is 366, which makes sense: this is the number of days since Jan 1 1960 .

They will then convert Jan 11 2002 to 88399 WHY? That doesn't make any sense. The number of days from Jan 1 1960 to Jan 11 2002 not equal to 88399, this is about 16K !!!

Where do they get 88399?

Thanks in advance!

I think this is either a typo in the documentation or a calculation error, and it is assumed that this will be January 11, 2 2 02.

FWIW, - 67019 seems correct and the correct value for January 11, 2002 is 15351 .
