Rails: why is there a .keep file in every directory

I see a .keep file in every directory in the rail framework.
what is this file for? What is its significance?

This is not for Rails in fact, this is for git.

Git does not track "empty" directories, therefore directories, for example, for example. "/ logs" will not get into the repository. Having .keep in it, the directory is tracked.
