How to enable CORS for the Google Places API

I tried my best to make my application work without the need to "Enable the CORS extension for Chrome." I followed the steps on the official Google website, which talks about authtokens, tried to use every other key, but nothing works. I get the following error:

XMLHttpRequest cannot load https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/place/nearbysearch/json?key=MyKey&location=33.854546,-84.35870369999999&types=restaurant&rankby=distance. There is no "Access-Control-Allow-Origin" header on the requested resource. The origin of http://localhost:8100 is therefore not allowed.

Is it possible to access the Google Places API from within an application without the CORS extension for Chrome?
