USB3 and Kinect 2 Controller

I recently upgraded my PC to Windows 8.1 to make it compatible with Kinect v2. This is ASUS N53S with the following features:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7 - 2670QM (2.2 GHz)
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: GEForce GT 550M
  • USB3 Controller: Fresco Logic xHCI

When starting Kinect v2 Configuration Verifier, I get all the elements in green except for the USB controller (even if Kinect is detected). I assume this means that the USB hub is incompatible or the driver is missing.

I looked at the device manager and saw that there is a wdf kinectsensor 0 interface next to it. The warning contains code 10 , which means that the device cannot be started.

Otherwise, all drivers are updated.

I looked through a lot and found out that other people with the same USB controller have similar problems, but do not mention solutions.

Does anyone have an idea of โ€‹โ€‹what might be the problem?

Not all USB 3 controllers support Kinect v2. As described in this page on Xbox.com:

Only USB3 controllers from Intel and Renesas are supported.

If you use a different brand of USB3 controller, the Kinect sensor may not work properly.

This other page (from the official MSDN documentation) has another useful piece of information about USB 3 controllers:

If you are adding USB 3.0 functionality to your existing PC through an adapter, make sure it is a Windows 8 compatible device and that it supports Gen-2

Thus, your controller may be non-Gen-2 (see this forum for more information on USB 3.1 Gen-2).

  • Some laptops store multiple USB 2.0 ports along with USB 3.0 ports. Make sure the cable is connected to the USB 3.0 port. Typically, a USB 3.0 port has a โ€œSSโ€ symbol next to a USB symbol.

  • If you are sure that Kinect is connected to the USB 3.0 port, restart the computer, and the kinect cable is connected to the computer. I ran into this problem on my HP laptop and restarting my PC, so that works for me. Hope this works for you too.

I had a similar problem that was captured by EventLogger that Kinectservice.exe could not be started due to the lack of MFPlat.DLL . In fact, KinectConfigurationVerifier notices โ€œCheck kinetics depth and color streamsโ€ with an exclamation mark. After a short DLL search, the problem may be caused by the lack of a multimedia system package.

In versions of Windows N (EU version without a media player), applications fail with a system error that is missing from MFReadWrite.dll or MFPlat.DLL. You need Feature Feature for your version of Windows: Blockquote
