How to unzip a pkg file from OSX 10.10 and higher

I tried extracting Essentials.pkg from OS X 10.10 after solving from this answer. But did not succeed.

I get a gunzip: unknown compression format error if I try to extract using cmd: cat Payload | gunzip -dc |cpio -i cat Payload | gunzip -dc |cpio -i

I get the error: tar: Unrecognized archive format , if I try to extract using cmd: tar xzvf Payload Can anyone suggest a solution?
