Is there a fix for the Overlay TortiseSVN icon on Windows

Once upon a time, TortiseSVN overlay icons disappeared on my Windows 10 PC. A quick Google search shows many, many, many examples of this over the past few years from Windows 7 to the latest Windows 10.

In general, proposals are divided into two groups. Various manipulations that no longer work, and manually hack the registry using RegEdit to remove some other icons. In addition, there are many examples of this problem for Tortisehg and TortiseGit.

Thus, we are on the same page, this is the version of Tortise and Windows, which upsets me today. It is time to find a way to fix this problem instead of cheating inside the registries. Removing TortiseSVN and reinstalling for me does not work.

This in itself indicates a fundamental imho problem. If TortiseSVN works on Monday and doesn’t work, if I installed it on Wednesday - the icon management underlying the tool seems to be fautly.

In any case, I hope that someone wiser can offer or point us to a tool or script or patch that will actually solve the problem.
The problem is compounded by the windows because it makes OneDrive a kind of protected species, and I cannot move or rename these icons (at least for now).

It is time to find a way to fix this problem, instead of cheating inside the registries.

What I am trying to do for this problem was to automate registry manipulation; uses a hack that everyone seems to use (pre-spaces before overlay entries) and even suggests restarting Windows Explorer afterwards:

Removing TortiseSVN and reinstalling for me does not work.

This only solves some forms of corruption in the registry, and not what is already suggested in other comments: the most common reason for such a problem is the restriction of the overlay that gets into it.

Bonus : simply change the tool for similar actions: for example, make sure that GoogleDrive icons GoogleDrive always visible.

All the methods that I could find using Google did not work, but I fixed it with this method:

Open Regedit and go to this place: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

Here all overlay icons are defined, and the order of their application is also determined. The problem is that Windows uses only the first 15 of them, and Dropbox uses 10 of them. They add 3 leading spaces to Dropbox item names to make sure they come first.

Now just add 4 leading spaces to the turtle icons that you would like to make first.

I do not use Windows 10 and do not have icon conflicts, so this may not apply to this specific issue. This also applies to other common tortoiseSVN icon glitches. Before starting your regedit you can try changing the icon set to another, and then proceed to restart. If everything is fine with you, then you do not need to update the registry yourself. enter image description here

This may not be 100% relevant to your case, but without harm when trying.

If you have Dropbox on this workstation, one of the latest Dropbox updates interrupts the TortoiseSVN overlay icons. Read https://stortoisesvn.tigris.org/ds/viewMessage.do?dsForumId=4061&dsMessageId=3199988

To fix the problem, uninstall Dropbox or read the FAQ and configure the Windows registry to enable TortoiseSVN overlay icons.
