What does Apple News use to determine the display of images?

Today we have created several of our websites in Apple News. For half of our sites (built on the same platform), images are displayed in the "Article List" view in 95% of cases. The other half of our sites displays an image in the article list 0% of the time.

However, images are reliably displayed on the View Article page.

The images used are almost certainly not the ones indicated in the RSS feed in the multimedia thumbnail icon; they are almost certainly scraped off from the article itself. Images are set correctly in OG tags.

This behavior is compatible between iPads and iPhones.

Any ideas are welcome.

I can think of several things, this may or may not constitute a complete answer, but its some ideas.

  • A custom image host on a web server that monitors all requests (nginx - awstats - etc)

  • Wrap the images or URLs in the tracking URL of the script (you can even monetize) where you send the URL of the image and get it in return (call something like In-Image Advertising or using link tracking / redirector)

  • embed javascript in a theme or do something in this news item that tracks every uploaded image (OR

The rest of these ideas really depend very much on your control and skills.

Hope I helped you with some good ideas. Wanting to help more.
