Unicode emojis not showing up in Chrome

When I embed unicode emojis in <span> using standard jQuery, they do not appear in Chrome (v48), but work with Firefox (v43) and Safari (v9). Compare these screenshots:

Any explanation here?

The problem is that the range had font-weight:bold . As soon as I put font-weight:normal , emojis appeared.
