Lost code codes when Notepad ++ crashes

I worked on a .js file this morning on Notepad ++, as usual when the program just crashed. So I finished it and opened it again to see that all my lines of code in my .js file disappeared, and now all that I have left is a 0kb file, because there is nothing left in it. How the hell is this possible? He deleted everything that I typed and saved the file as if there was nothing in it.

Do you know a way to return my code? Or did something like this happen to someone?: / I care because there is a lot of work, and I don’t feel that I am rewriting all this ...

If this option is enabled (and it is by default), Notepad ++ keeps a backup copy of the files you are editing.

You can find backups in the % APPDATA% \ Notepad ++ \ backup directory in the format filename@datetime .

I lost four unsaved files when my Notepad ++ crashed, I searched the network and found another way to get unsaved files besides the backup folder

C: \ Users \ {username} \ AppData \ Roaming \ Notepad ++ \ backup

Hope this helps others who are facing the same issue as me. You can try to find dump files in

C: \ Users \ {username} \ AppData \ Local \ Temp \ N ++ RECOV

Inside will be a .dump file where I found unsaved files. You can open the dump file with Notepad ++ and see your unsaved work.

This has happened to me several times recently, and I found several solutions that allow you to recover lost code.

For Windows 7 and possibly other modern versions of Windows:

  • Find the file in Explorer. The size will be 0 KB. Right-click on it, and then select "Properties" in the context menu.
  • Select the Previous Versions tab. There is a good chance that you will find a fairly recent version saved during the last restore point. If it's a bit old, it's still probably better than the current 0K.
  • Click the Restore button.

My personal best solution:

Since this happened to me several times, and the previous version of Windows was not always up to date, I was looking for another solution that could always give me the latest, latest version before the 0KB crash.

I found that I already have a solution installed on my computer. I have a SugarSync account that always supports my work files in the cloud. Most of the service is that SugarSync always saves the last 5 versions in the cloud, so if the current version is 0 KB, you can download the next latest version and update the file on your computer.

If you have another backup program, you can check to see if this service supports other versions that you can restore.

I have used notepad ++ without any backups for many years. One day this will happen to me.

Here is what I found as possible solutions:

http://buffernow.com/notepad-plus-crash-recover-your-lost-file/ (similar to Indrajit's answer) - doesn't help much. I did not find my file there.

I have restored my file a week ago in response to Hvck

Same problem. Same answers: https://superuser.com/questions/390204/how-to-restore-a-previous-version-of-file-in-notepad

One lesson learned: use backup!

notepad ++ backup

** UPDATE **

It happened to me again !!! Another way to recover my file is to view the source code in my browser and save the file elsewhere. If you are lucky that the file is downloaded to your browser :) It worked for me for the css file and for the js file.

File Comparison: N ++ backup and file from browser and files. OMG!

I know that it is too late to answer this question, but perhaps my answer will help others.

I recently ran into the same problem. Then it became regular. I did not find a solution to the problem itself, and this can be caused by many different reasons, therefore, probably, a universal solution does not exist.

However, there is a way to save your files while notepad ++ is not closed. Even if the backup folder is empty.

First of all, do not close Notepad ++. Open the task manager, find the notepad ++ process and find the Dump or Create dump file option. Click on it. This will result in an entire process memory dump. This dump will contain the documents that you have opened. However, you may need to find this data, and may also be in a different encoding. I think this is in UTF8 most of the time, but I'm not quite sure.

The dump file can be checked using simple programs such as notepad ++ itself or a hex editor.

I tried all the above solutions, but nothing worked for me.

But, fortunately, I opened the files a day earlier in eclipse. Eclipse and all other IDEs support the cache of all files. You can get a copy of the file from this cache. To get a copy from the eclipse.

  • Right click on file name
  • Go to Replace with - Previous of Local History

This answer applies to later versions of NotePad ++: Go to the file folder, see if there is a subfolder called nppBackup. I recently discovered that a backup was not created in% AppData% / Notepad ++ / backup, but it is always created here, with the following file name format [original file name] [date stamp] _ [time stamp]. • Notepad does not automatically save its open file, so, unfortunately, you have lost your work .
  • The next time you can use Notepad ++ , it automatically downloads the file.
  • Link to this link can help you Notepad ++ recovery
