GLib-GIO-Message: using GSettings "memory". Happened in Ubuntu 16.10 after moving from GNOME to Unity in GNOME again

GNOME on Ubuntu 16.10 works great for me on my HiDPI laptop. As linux users with HiDPI displays know, scaling of the window scaling factor is required so that the machine can be used without an electron microscope.

Today I logged out, logged into a Unity desktop session, and left to return to GNOME. For some reason, all of my GNOME settings that displayed HiDPI display functionality seemed to disappear. Here is the worst part:

I would like to use:

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings overrides "{'Gdk/WindowScalingFactor': <2>}"

But this just leads to the message:

GLib-GIO-Message: Using the 'memory' GSettings backend. Your settings will not be saved or shared with other applications.

I apologize, but I'm not too good at the intricacies of this. I would like to provide more information, but I'm not sure what matters.

Any help is MASSIVE appreciated.
