Error loading projects in Visual Studio 2015

When I open .sln in Visual Studio 2010, the projects load properly. But when I open the same solution with Visual Studio 2015 (Professional with Update 1), the projects do not load with an error (loading failed). This is shown below:

Projects not loading

Can anyone suggest a solution for this?

I already had this problem, and in my case, I solved it by running VS as Administrator.

I encountered this problem for various reasons, but deleting all the .vs folders (there was one at the solution level, and some projects had my own) worked for me.

How: Close the solution, delete all .vs folders, open the solution again.

Try the following:

  • Open the Output window ( View β†’ Output or Ctrl+Alt+O ).

  • Then right-click one of the failed projects and select Reload Project .

A more detailed error message appears in the Output window.

Try deleting the .suo and .user files.

For those who received this error but did not move projects

Try deleting the .suo files in your solution folder. The user decision options file is a binary file that contains various user information and settings, such as the location of breakpoints.

If this does not help, try deleting the .user file as well. If you are having trouble finding a .suo file

In Visual Studio 2015 (also in Community Edition), the .suo file is located in the hidden .vs folder in the solution folder. Since a hidden attribute has been applied to both the .vs folder and the .suo file, you must expand them using Explorer by changing the folder settings to "show hidden files, folders, and drives." How to get to this option in Explorer depends on the version of Windows:

  • In Windows 7, the setting is under Organization> Folder and Search Options.
  • in Windows 8, it’s on the View tab> Options> Change Folder and Search Options.
  • on Windows 10 it is the same as on Windows 8.

You may need to correct the path to the projects according to the new environment. Please see below for how to do this.

I had this problem when a colleague was not able to open a solution containing many projects. Previously, I migrated the solution from VS2013 to VS2015, and I had no problems loading projects after opening the solution.

Fixed installation of SSDT for VS2015 https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssdt/download-sql-server-data-tools-ssdt#ssdt-for-visual-studio-2015

This allowed all projects to load correctly as part of the solution.

I opened the .sln file (MySolutionName.sln) with Notepad ++ and edited the following parts. I had 3 projects in my solution:

 MyProject1Name, MyProject2Name, MyProject3Name
  1. Project("{FAE04EC0-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}") = "MyProject1Name", "MySolutionName\MyProject1Name.csproj", "{D9FA9D42-71F3-459E-9643-426F002713EE}" EndProject

  2. Project("{FAE04EC0-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}") = "MyProject2Name.Service", "MyProject2Name\MyProject2Name.csproj", "{173F0709-90E3-48B9-AA06-4AEC9957AFED}" EndProject

  3. Project("{FAE04EC0-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC}") = "MyProject3Name", "MyProject3Name\MyProject3Name.csproj", "{B5F4ADAC-7C37-4A2C-B15A-56C50F3BF7C9}" EndProject

then everything worked correctly and the projects loaded successfully.

I had the same problem with a web project that I decided to remove it by deleting applicationhost.config from the .vs \ config folder.

I recently turned on SSL for this project, and then turned it off again, reverting the changes from another solution, I suspect this is due to this.

deleting .vs files worked for me as well. Now I can rename the project file. I am using VS 2017

Right-click on the project that failed, and select the reboot option from the context menu. A screen appears that is related to the resolution, uncheck the box and continue. It is noticed that the initialization and loading of the project will occur correctly
