What is the purpose of the AppManifest.xaml file in Silverlight applications?

When I open the .xap file, which is generated as a result from a Silverlight application that I recently worked with, I noticed a file called AppManifest.xaml .

I also noticed an option on the property pages for the Silverlight project, which allows you to optionally display AppManifest.xaml for the project. However, when I remove this option, I get errors when starting the application: Invalid or malformed application: Check manifest .

What is the purpose of the AppManifest.xaml file?
