A simple live chat web application (LAMP stack) that integrates with Jabber / Aim

I have searched for this several times in the past, but to no avail. I need a simple php/ajax web chat interface that, and this is the critical part, will interact with my IM client (Pidgin) ... via Jabber or Aim. Plugoo is almost what I want, except that it is hosted and flash. A flash would be fine if it weren’t perfect, but hosting is not.

Please note that I don’t only need notifications, but I want the website user who clicks “live chat” to get the chat interface, and my IM client allows me to interact with them.

This is very convenient for those of us who want to provide live support to customers who do not use IM.

It is not so difficult if you implement the Oscar protocol that uses AIM. This is not very difficult, and it will allow you to create a good AIM web client for your site. There may be a third-party solution that you can use, but as far as I know, the Oscars are pretty trivial.

(Disclaimer: I work for Jabber, Inc. , a commercial company for a product I'm about to pimp.)

JabberWerx AJAX http://www.jabber.com/images/GroupChatAJAXThumb.png

JabberWerx AJAX libraries do exactly what you want. You include a link to the Javascript library, add the div tag where you want to send chat, and add a couple of javascript configuration lines to link them together. There is also a one-to-one mode. If you want, user accounts can be created on the fly.

Sorry for the announcement, but I think this is exactly what you want.

If you use Strophe , it should be easy to get this to work, especially if you have a copy of XMPP Professional Programming using JavaScript and jQuery , Jack Moffitt .

Most likely, the fastest way I can think of would be to add a Google Talk gadget to your page. You will need a gmail account yourself, but there are no visitors on your page, they can just start a chat. Google Talk works great with Pidgin.

If you want to collapse your own, the Jabber Wiki has a list of web clients for Jabber:

JWChat can do what you want.

For a PHP-based solution, you can try creating your application using the Jaxl library . We fully use this library to create a hosted Jaxl IM service that integrates with the entire XMPP client (pidgin, psi, gtalk) on any platform (mobile, desktop, network).

Everything that we use to create a Jaxl IM solution is open in the form of a Jaxl library and can be used to create our own custom solutions. Let us know if you need advice / assistance in your project.
