When do you install "Pointer to this resource" on IIS6?

When setting up the IIS6 Home Properties Directory for a website, there is the Index this Resource option, which is set by default.

Microsoft website says:

Grant this permission to allow Microsoft Serve Indexing to include this folder in the full-text index of a website. when you grant this permission, users can fulfill requests on this resource.

Can someone give me more information about when you will check this parameter? What queries will be performed by the user on this resource? What is pro and con for this on / off kit for website?

The Windows Indexing Service constantly extracts content from files (for which the corresponding IFilter is installed) in accordance with the specified directory and creates an indexed directory to facilitate quick and quick searches.

When you install "Index this resource" in IIS 6 and the Windows Index Service, the service adds the actual physical path of the website / virtual directory / directory / subdirectory to the list of directories that will be indexed into the Web directory and the service starts indexing the files.

There are various ways to interact interactively with the Windows Indexing Service to search for indexed files / content; such as the OLE DB provider, query assistant and others ....

Enable option: When

  • Custom Search Through Windows Indexing Service
  • Website / Directory contains files to be found.

Set Off: When

  • Custom searches will not use the Windows indexing service.

The Windows Indexing Service constantly indexes the contents of sites / directories in which the option is enabled, and this can lead to performance problems. He recommended disabling the setting on site / sites that do not use Microsoft indexing services.

Note. The Windows Index Service is disabled by default in Windows Server 2003.

This is used for the indexing service that was used to manage the search. I don’t think anyone is using this anymore. This is pretty intense against HD. Check if the indexing service is enabled on your server. By default we will disable.
