Will Oracle remove 10gAS in favor of WebLogic?

Oracle acquired BEA and the WebLogic toolkit. They still have a competing product on their own 10gAS application server. Both are Java EE , enterprise level servers. Although this will take some time due to service agreements, it would be unusual for them to continue manufacturing two products in the same architectural space. So that...

  • Will they remove their previous application server in favor of WebLogic?
  • Is WebLogic the one to be deleted?
  • How long can this process take? Many years?

What did they do with PeopleSoft and Oracle Applications? Probably the same model will be executed.

You can go through Oracle's (fairly long) PDF strategy guide . However, the key slide is probably No. 48. Oracle placed BEA Weblogic on the Strategic Products list and Oracle Application Server on the Continue and Convert list. Thus, Oracle indicated that Oracle App Server will go away (in marketing, that it will converge with BEA products), and that BEA Weblogic will be a strategic direction in the future.

Regarding question 3, I am sure it will be at least a few years depending on your definition of β€œretired”.

Yes. They have already announced their position. OC4J / Orion will continue to be supported, however weblogic is the future of the platform.

As you say, it would be unusual for them to maintain two products in the same architectural space. I don’t know Java application servers, but given the climate of financial markets, and that it would probably take a lot of money to support two such application servers, I would say that it is a foregone conclusion that one of the products will be reduced, and sooner rather than later. (as soon as the costs of eliminating violations of maintenance contracts fall below the cost of maintaining the outbound product). As for what will happen, my bet will be on WebLogic, because it "was not invented here" ...

Yes, it is a fact. Oracle explained this on the product roadmap earlier this year. The "new" product is called Oracle Weblogic Server, and is what all sellers should offer new customers from now on. The PDF file published by Justin shows that.

In terms of Oracle, Oracle Application Server contains much more than just a J2EE server. One component is the J2EE server, which used to be OC4J. Oracle announced that their new J2EE strategic server is WebLogic.

Thus, there will be a product called "Oracle Application Server", but from version 11g the J2EE server will be WebLogic.

Oracle will release version 11g of oc4j, but after that, Oracle WebLogic Server (WLS) will be the preferred Java EE server . WLS is much better with clustering and has a lot of JMS / JDBC .
