Can an iPhone or iPod Touch communicate with another device in the same room?

I am new to iPhone and iPod touch app development. Is it possible to communicate directly between two devices in the same room using WiFi or maybe even BlueTooth on the iPhone?

I saw a demonstration of a fire application where one iPhone β€œlights” the other iPhone as they approach each other. How is this achieved?

The bottom line is that I’m studying the option of developing a game in which you can play with another person in the same room.

iPhone supports Bonjour-based service discovery, and several applications use this to do things like sync with a PC on the same network. Explore samples and manuals in the iPhone SDK. Good examples for WiTap and BonjourWeb. NSNetServices and CFNetServices are the APIs you'll deal with Bonjour
