What does the Facebook Connect platform offer through the traditional Facebook app?

Facebook Connect looks like a new new way to use your Facebook user account on your own site (get a list of your friends, write their profile, etc.). I do not understand what the new Facebook Connect platform offers through the traditional Facebook application with the provided offline access permissions.

Can someone help me by providing a clear explanation of the differences between the two options? When would it be better to use one over the other?

The Facebook connection is apparently intended to integrate with sites that are not accessible through Facebook, and sites that exist outside of facebook, and use facebook as an integration method.

I think this is a completely different way of doing things, if you want to integrate facebook into your own website, Facebook Connect is the way to go. If you want to create an application to work inside facebook, the current method is the way to go.
