IPhone keyboard switch keyboard disabled

I have a UITextField where the keyboard that appears has a Shift key . The keyboard type is set to UIKeyboardTypeNamePhonePad , which seems to allow capitals.

If I changed the keyboard type to "default", but left the other settings myself, the Shift key is active. Other settings:

  • auto-capitalization and auto-correction are turned off
  • default appearance
  • return key "done"

I am running iPhone OS 2.2.

Has anyone seen this? I do not understand why the type "name phone pad" would disable the Shift key .

I'm not sure what the logic of this solution was, but it doesn't seem like there is a way to enable the shift key on this keyboard. I talked a bit with this myself and found this article that seems to agree. You may need to use the default keyboard and filter out any characters you don't want (not a perfect interface, but easy to make), or create a custom keyboard ( example )
