PNG TrayIcon transparency on Windows

I am trying to use transparent PNG as an icon for my Java application. The image in the JFrame and taskbar works fine. However, when I use the image with TrayIcon, I get a black matte background around the edge of the PNG.

Anyone else run into this problem? I would really like to use PNG instead of GIF or JPEG.

With Java6 , a PNG image should be used for TrayIcon , but as mentioned in this SO Question , check:

• The background color selected to represent the transparent pixels.
• transparency options
• icon resolution
• an alternative format such as SVG (provided that you use an external library, for example Batik , and converting mechnism to java.awt.Image )
