Open and read Excel from Linux-based Linux programs?

Question

I am trying to find a set of source codes that will allow me to open and read the contents of an Excel file in Linux from program C.

I really don't want to associate it with the OpenOffice SDK if I can find something that just does these two things.

As far as I know, there is no library that does this. The usual method is always to save the file as CVS in Excel, although then markup, etc. Lost.

You can try using the Excel plugin in Gnumeric:

It works very well (inside gnumeric).

You can use xlhtml to convert Excel files to HTML, and then use your favorite HTML parser to extract cell data.
