On Mac or BSD, use:

sudo ipfw pipe 1 config bw 350kbit/s plr 0.05 delay 500ms sudo ipfw add pipe 1 dst-port http 

And until reset to your initial settings:

 sudo ipfw flush

Apple now has an official developer tool called Network Link Conditioner, which mimics various network conditions. It has some more powerful features like SpeedLimit and Charlie - for example, it can simulate packet loss and DNS latency, as well as bandwidth and delay - and it's free.

Network Link-air conditioning is equipped with Xcode , with free download, but also very large download!

Charles and Fiddler are HTTP proxies that can throttle your speed, among other things. You can even tell your iPod or iPhone to use them, and capture all the traffic going and going.

When I assessed how part of the software would work with a poor cellular card connection, I wrapped around a tin foil around the antenna. It sounds silly, but it worked very well; the signal dropped to one bar, but did not disappear completely.

I also tried putting the laptop in the microwave, which was not so effective.

Not that I knew. If you want to see how everything looks at boot, you can use firebug and set breakpoints in javascript or breakpoints on your server. I always use this technique to see how everything looks when they load.
