In SCM, what is Bill Materials?

When reading about SCM (the mgt software configuration, not the mgt supply chain), I saw the mention of the Bill of Materials as an assembly document. What is included in the Bill of Materials and what is its purpose?

Is this a widely used document?

The actual content and meaning of SCM Specification (BOM) depends on the tools used and the magazine. In short, they are usually just a list of files used to create the system / product / component.

A specification cannot be complete if it does not contain version information for each of the files in this list.

I have actively supported SCM systems over the past 10 years, and we have never used this terminology. The place where I saw the term “Bill of Materials” (BOM), used earlier, was in “Manufacturing”, where it was intended for all the physical components used to assemble the product.

In the Hi-tech companies I worked with, we used the same concept, the list of versions, defined for creating software at a certain point in time. In fact, a list of these files (with version numbers) was specifically used to check which parts of the product were changed between releases.

Remember version numbers, listing is not very useful without them.

SCM = Supply Chain Management? Software configuration management? Source code management? Please edit your question.

Despite this, the Bill materials usually refer to a document that lists the parts and parts that make up the “element”, and, if often a nested structure, that is, the elements consist of other elements that are made as well as other objects. The definition of an element obviously depends on usage, but as an example:

Car 1x Steering Wheel 2ft Leather 1 horn 4x Normal Wheels 1 Tire 1 Hub 7 Lug Nuts 1x Radio

In this example, each of these lines is “objects,” but the “Car” element consists of a steering wheel, 4 wheels, and a radio. However, each wheel consists of 1 tire, 1 hub and 7 tips.

In Software Configuration Management, the idea remains the same, but now you are listing the pieces of software that make up the “package”, and these pieces of software may themselves have pieces. Same idea, just a different definition of "item".
