Localhost lookup fails, instead the browser tries to use www.localhost.com

I constantly ran web applications on my laptop, no problem, I use VWD 2008 Express, I have the latest structure, Windows Vista Home Basic ... etc. Now, when I try to launch a website or even decide to display the page in a browser from VWD, the browser (both IE and Firefox) continues to search for www.localhost.com ...

I tried to copy the address and paste it directly into the title bar, nothing, the same problem, I tried to get this address from the balloon notification (the one that appears when starting any ASP.net project), still nothing happens ...

My colleague is facing the same problem, but for him, he can just copy and paste the URL into the address bar, but it does not work with me .... Heeeeeellllllllllllllllllp

Check the hosts file , it should redirect localhost to 127.0.0.1 and nothing more. The entry causing this error should look like this:

127.0.0.1 www.localhost.com

If you find this, delete it or change www.localhost.com to localhost.

You can also try to publish one of them in the address bar:

 127.0.0.1 http://localhost

Please note that the hosts file is a popular victim of viruses, so if it has been modified, you can run a virus scan.

If this also does not work, open nod32 (you may have installed it on your system, if the above methods do not work) go to advanced settings, select protocol filtering in the menu on the left and select HTTP and POP3 Ports ...;)

I have the same problem in firefox 3.6 when my server was down. In my case, this was not a problem with etc / hosts, where is the line

127.0.0.1 localhost

was and ok.

The solution that worked for me was to disable the "cleaver" URL fix that Firefox executes when the page is not found. Procedure taken from here :

  • Enter approximately: config in the address bar and press return.
  • find browser.fixup.alternate.enabled
  • double-click true. The string will become bold and the value will change to false

Fix the problem directly. No need to restart firefox. If your server does not work, you get a "page not found" as expected. Hope this helps.

A few random things to check ...

  • localhost is the common name for the IP address 127.0.0.1 . If this address does not work, there is a problem with the network configuration.

  • Somewhere there will be a hosts , perhaps somewhere like C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts , which should only contain this definition for localhost. If there are more names in it, and you did not put them there, then you will have another problem.

There is also the possibility of a frontal slap that your web server is currently down. :)
