For native BlackBerry application development (i.e., developing Java applications), there are basically 4 options:
- RIM JDE is pretty much a terrible editor, but the most stable, the most full-featured (from a promising BlackBerry) solution.
- Rcl JDE plugin for Eclipse - you get all the subtleties of the Eclipse environment, but there are a lot of problems.
- Netbeans Mobility Pack - I actually haven't seen anyone use this for a while, but several developers swore it a couple of years ago
- Custom Eclipse / JDE environment - using ant scripts and the RIM JDWP debugger interface (component package section on this page). This used to be the only way to develop Eclipse for BlackBerry before the JDE plugin.
Options 3 and 4 I have not seen for a long time, I'm not sure that they are still viable - although I do not understand why there will be no No. 4.
I used # 4 for a long time until RIM released its plugin. While there are still many problems with it , for me, improving the performance of something like Eclipse outweighs them.
So, either 1 or 2, with the caveat that you should choose one or the other for your entire team, since they are really incompatible with each other (differences in the structure of the project and how they process resources). You can easily move from 1 to 2, but not really the other way around.
