IPhone UITextField: how to insert a new line using the return key?

I want to get a carriage return / new line by pressing the back key on the UITextField keyboard. I found out that textFieldShouldReturn is being called.

But how do I insert a carriage return into a text box?

Instead, you want to use a UITextView. UITextFields are for single-line input, while UITextViews supports multi-line input.
