Using iso to create VMware vmdk

Can someone point me to the documentation on how I can use Iso to create a Vmware environment.

For example, there is this guy who made his own version of Ubuntu with the addition of additional additional programs. Before I try to do this, I will run it using the vmware server. But I'm a bit confused as to how to do this with just an ISO file.

Just create a new virtual machine and attach the ISO to the virtual CD-ROM drive. This can be done when creating a virtual machine. When you download it, you can install it as if you were doing it on a real machine.
