Access VPN connection on the guest virtual PC from the main operating system

I start my host system - Win 7 x64 and start an instance of Virtual PC XP. I run the Cisco ISPec VPN client on the guest XP VPC OS and can successfully connect to my company’s corporate network.

I cannot start the Cisco IPSec sw client on the host because it is 64-bit, Cisco does not support the 64-bit version of its IPSec client products, and at the moment I do not have much choice in terms of switching to the Cisco SSL VPN client (AnyConnect )

The guest OS XP VPC does not use a NAT network adapter, but a physical device adapter.

I can run Ping Host from the guest OS and vice versa when the Cisco Client does not work in the XP VPC guest OS.

A couple of problems:

  • When the Cisco client works and connects, the guest OS no longer sees the host.

  • I would like to have access to the VPN from the host when an XP VPC guest connects to the VPN.

For # 2, I tried at least one method described: xenomorph.net/use-cisco-vpn-under-vista-x64/

This method includes ICS in the Cisco pseudo-network adapter.

I could not get this to work. I may have followed the instructions incorrectly.

I also looked: http://www.pringle.net.nz/blog/PermaLink,guid,12ee0de7-f998-4084-8b06-537b3dbd5d9a.aspx

... which involves using the Loopback adapter and switching between the host and the guest OS. I did not follow this because the instructions are not entirely clear.

Finally, I saw links on the net regarding the x64 build for OpenVPN, but I hesitate to go in that direction.

Can someone direct me in the right direction as to what to do?

Here's what worked for me using the Windows host and Ubuntu VM. (The instructions below are for the VMWare player).

In short:

  • Connect to the VPN on the host.
  • Connect the host vpn adapter to the corresponding VM network adapter a. It was VMnet0 in my case. b. I recommend using vmnetcfg.exe for this. It comes with a VMWare workstation, but it's a bit of a manual process to manually extract it. 1. Find the steps for this on the SO or SU website.
  • Configure a guest virtual machine to share (NAT) host IP addresses

For detailed instructions for steps 1 and 3, see: https://superuser.com/questions/842489/vm-share-hosts-vpn-connection/842594

actually cisco has a cisco vpn client for Windows 7 64 bit, you can find it on 4shared.com, but still cisco does not have a client for Windows 8
