The first thing you need to pay attention to is that there are two structures that use EXT and GWT:
Both are based on the Ext JS component library.
Gwt-Ext is based on the old version of Ext JS, when it was still LGPL, but was no longer being developed .
Ext GWT is owned by the same company that is still developing Ext JS. It is still being developed and is available under free and commercial licenses, and of the two, the one I would use.
SmartGWT is an alternative (and this is what GWT-Ext people are transitioning to). My colleague looked at him and didnโt like him the same way as Ext GWT, since he has a pretty thin wrapper around JavaScript SmartClient, while Ext GWT has quite a lot of Java code. The difference is that if you run the Ext GWT application in Hosted Mode and attach your debugger, you will see what Ext GWT does, but with SmartGWT you will see many IDispatch calls where it will disappear in native JavaScript, where your debugger wonโt be able to follow.
