How to show function prototype in Emacs?

In C mode, I can go to the function using M-. in the name of the function .... is there a way that I can simply display the prototype of the function? (preferably as a tooltip or so), I often try to remember the exact order and types required by this function.

c-eldoc-mode is a mode that is not as heavy as CEDET, which will do exactly what you want.

CEDET (rumor has it that it will finally become part of Emacs starting at 23.2) is your friend. After installation, find semantic-ia-show-summary .

The CEDET package provides a semantic-ia-show-summary function that can show a prototype of a function / variable at a point
