What free project planning tools, such as Microsoft Project, do you use?

I would like to know what tools are there and whether you have positive or negative experience.

Important features for me are

  • Nesting tasks inside tasks
  • calculation of effort sums for task hierarchies
  • dependencies between tasks
  • resource allocation
  • Gantt or another kind of timeline

I stumbled upon OpenPROJ and that sounds promising. Any experiences?

Thanks!

I used the OpenPROJ bit and it does what it needs to do and is very much like Microsoft Project. So much so that it quickly becomes very difficult to store project data (as is the case with Microsoft Project). I have to say that the latest version of Microsoft Project that I used is 2000, so I am not comparing it with the latest version.

I used Planner and I like it. Pretty stable and does not suffer from creep. This is a little more than you listed, but very useful. It is focused and has a simple user interface, so it does not bother you.

edit

You can also take a look at the GanttPV website and Simple Project Management Planner (Linux) .

Planner runs on windows and linux. It's based on GTK +.
