VS 2005, SQL 2008, KB954961 Will not install - Win7 x64 Issue?

I recently installed Win 7 x64 on my machine. I have Visual Studio 2005 Standard, and you need to install the update to support SQL 2008, so I can connect to the remote SQL Server in VS.

When I try to start the update, I get this message:

The update patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the updated program may be missing or updating the patch may update another version of the program. Make sure that the program to be updated exists on your computer and that you have the correct update patch.

I checked that VS has SP 1, and even tried reinstalling it.

I am wondering if the problem could be in Windows 7 64bit? Has anyone had this problem?

The upgrade that you want to install requires Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Professional Edition or Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Team System Edition. The standard version cannot apply the update ...

Refer to the system requirements section of the Microsoft support page .

Sorry that doesn't work for you ... sounds like a lot of frustration.
