IPhone cannot support development

I recently reinstalled OSX. It was a pain covering all my certificates, etc., but I finally came back. However, when I try to install the application on either of the two iPhone 3G I have, they both say:

Software Version: 4.2.1 (8C148) | Xcode cannot find a software image to install this version. | Failed to support development.

What's happening? Both iPhones list themselves up-to-date in iTunes, and the iOS Developer Center lists only 4.2 as available SDKs.

EDIT: I have a paid membership and I have recently installed test applications on both of these devices.

UPDATE: I deleted all 3 (included 2) from my devices from the provisioning portal and deleted them from the organizer, closed Xcode, disconnected the device, restarted, connected the device, no luck.

Classical; -)

  • connect iphone
  • Go to Xcode -> Window -> organizer
  • find your iphone and click "Use for development"

  • As Jacob said: try adding / removing your device.

If you still get this error, you have obsolete Xcode

I just got this error with Xcode 4.0.2 and iPhone 3G with 4.2.1 (final 4.x is allowed on 3G). I restarted Xcode, and it went through the process of collecting debugging information, and then gave me a green light. The other answers here say that you may also need to exit iTunes for this to work.

Conclusion: Try restarting Xcode . Exit iTunes first if it was open.

I had the same issue with iOS 5.0.1 and Xcode 4.2. I restarted Xcode, like the others. However, I also needed to close iTunes, which automatically started and pulled the iPhone out of iTunes. Then restart Xcode and it works fine.

Just ran into this problem. Firstly, I had both an expired certificate and an outdated profile profile, so I had to fix both (and I do it so rarely that it took 45 minutes). Then there was still a mistake. I tried the phone on / off - without joy. Turn off the Organizer and reboot - you are also out of luck. Killed Xcode and rebooted, no luck.

Finally, I turned off the phone, turned off the Mac, turned off the top lights, and turned clockwise three times in my swivel chair, and then started again. Then it worked.

(I suspect iTunes was active and had something to do with this issue.)

I just happened. None of the above solutions seem to work. In the end, it turned out to be a faulty cable for charging the iPhone. So check it out if you see this message!

Try to free up memory by closing unnecessary open applications . I tried restarting Xcode and disconnecting iTunes, but still had a problem. Then I noticed that I had a 4GB MacBook White in my memory. I closed all unnecessary applications, and when I finished, a green light came on next to my iPad3, and I could run the application on it.

For me, the combination of Google Chrome with a large number of tabs is open, and Xcode is often enough to use all the available RAM; where 4 Gigs had enough memory to develop iOS, and Xcode 4.2 felt a little cramped.

It happened to me when I changed the name of my phone from "mark X phone" to a more anonymous name. The remote profile, the reconnected phone, worked automatically from there.

I had the same problem.

In my case, I should have

  • open itunes and agree to the new software agreement.
  • First, I agreed to this on the developer portal, and then from within iTunes.
  • I closed itunes, restarted xcode, and I liked the iPad.

Xcode 5, iPhone 4S, there is no new name or any other changes that I can think of.

I just left iTunes, disconnected the cable, and reconnected the cable. Then the organizer gave me a green light.

For me, this was caused by the lack of free space on the device - after deleting several videos and application documents, the Xcode organizer was able to complete the process of "copying characters", etc. It seems like this does not require a lot of space, so if iTunes does not show that the storage is almost full, this is almost certainly not the reason for other people.
