Choice of source control system: logical next steps after VSS

I have been using Git for the past few months and love it.

I examined how to place it in a corporate environment. Given a group of 10 people who use Visual SourceSafe, programming in Coldfusion, Powerbuilder, PHP, and a bit of .NET, I was surprised to find that the Git 'server' tool is still pretty rudimentary.

Git in the company - hosting your own server

Question Besides SVN, what other version control options will become the logical next step after VSS? Paid options are in order.

Something with a nice tool, it's not scary, it would be great :-)

Perforce (non-free) offers many features and tools. I heard Google use it. Perforce offers more advanced branching and merging capabilities than SVN.

There are several Git hosting services that provide web interfaces and integrated project management, and some of them are focused on corporate development teams. ProjectLocker and Codebase are two of these. Both Assembla and Github offer an installable version of their server software so that you can run a private instance of your service.

I think Team Foundation Server will be the next logical step from Visual Source Safe. You can also check out SourceGear Vault as another alternative to VSS.

Not a direct answer (since I am an SVN supporter myself), but look at the Wikipedia entries for List of Version Control Software and Compare Version Control Software . This will give you something to investigate while you wait for answers here, and you may find something little known that just fits the bill. :)

Team Foundation server, I believe, is the one that has been thrown around.

I would go with SVN or CVS. Large community and lots of tools and documentation.
