Emacs Accented Characters

When I type a character with an accent (for example, ñ, ç, ã), it itself is not inserted directly, but rather displays itself on the minibuffer as if it were a prefix key (for example, ç → ç-). Is there any way to change this behavior? I can’t even capture it with <f1> kç to find out what is happening.

Thanks!

Actually the emacs starter set issue, with binding (set-keyboard-coding-system 'utf-8)

CTRL + x 8 CTRL + h

What this will do is display a help window with all the key sequences for accented characters that are currently available to you.

For example:

 Key binding Cx 8 < « Cx 8 = ¯ Cx 8 > » Cx 8 ? ¿ Cx 8 C © Cx 8 L £ Cx 8 P ¶

Do Emacswiki Internationalization Pages Help ? What about recommendations in the language environment ?

Edit: see input methods - and in a new buffer I can do

  • Mx set-input-method for 'latin-1-prefix' (which also ends with TAB) and you get
  • Umlaute äöüÄÖÜ (¨ followed by a vowel)
  • Sharp-s ß (¨ followed by s)
  • Éèô accents (fwd or backtick or ^ followed by a vowel)

and they all display normally.
