How can I get started with Emacs + fcsh + Flex3?

I have sensible emacs-fu and I know how to use the Flash Builder IDE to work in Flex / Actionscript, but I would like to switch to using Emacs to do most of my encoding instead of flash builder. This creates some problems, namely that I'm not sure how to compile my flex project from the fcsh command line.

Here is a diagram of my setup:

  • My projects usually depend on a combination of compiled third-party .swc files.
  • I use some internal libraries that I store in Actionscript Library projects in FB.
  • Sometimes I recompile dependencies, but I can probably continue to do this in FB at a rare time when necessary.
  • Each Flex application project consists of a combination of MXML and an ActionScript source.

I have never used command line compilers this way, so I am a little fixated on how to get started. I keep reading about compile 1 when people talk about fcsh on the net, but that just gives me fcsh: Target 1 not found , which I mean that I had to start the โ€œcorrectโ€ compilation in advance. But no website touches on what should be just such a mystical spell.

So, the main question here is: what is the minimum complete set of steps, from opening an actionscript or MXML file to successfully compiling the file?

Here's the thing - fcsh is not really for creating projects, it's for gradual development.

The best way to determine fcsh is to first learn how to use mxmlc and compc on the command line. The verbosity required to compile your project using these tools annoys you at some point, so you will want to do an ant task or the like, as described above.

So, after you create the ant project, you will begin to realize that even if everything is fine-tuned, it still takes a lot more time to recompile than when using Flex Builder. The reason is incremental compilation - FB does not actually recompile everything, but only recompiles closing the dependency tree, which depends on any files that you changed.

Enter fcsh. This is basically a hacked version of mxmlc that includes the same incremental compilation code that FB uses. It stores many partial compilation results in indexed result sets, so this means "compilation 1"; this means "rebuild the same as before, but only recompile the changed material."

Well, that was a fact, so now on the opinion: do not worry. Although fcsh can significantly speed up the recompilation of a large fluffy source tree, the best answer is "don't arrange your code this way." I personally think that itโ€™s more thorough to break your source into creating SWCs or modules and configure several independent separately compiled libraries, and the dependencies shifted by the interface between them is a much better route. Then, when you recompile, you usually either rebuild the library or rebuild the application, but not all the others. For me, fcsh requires too much โ€œthinkingโ€ in the middle of compilation, while the hierarchy of library-based projects is almost as fast, and I can be more โ€œdumbโ€ in calling Mx compilation.

IT! And don't forget the "fdb". It is mostly compatible with gdb, so Mx gdb works very well, or at least it was once involved.: - D

See http://nisheet.wordpress.com/category/emacs/ or http://anirudhs.chaosnet.org/code/ani-fcsh.el.html to create a .emacs file and then (optionally) add an actioncript- mode with the following:
