Paste from a MS Word document into a web form

What is the most common way that people retain basic formatting elements such as bold accent and italics when copying to a text box from an MS Word document. I noticed that Gmail does this well, and StackOverflow does not. Are there common frameworks that do this?

Perhaps one of the most common rich text controls is FCKEditor (now, thank God, it's called CKEditor). It does a great job of saving the format when pasting from Word.

We use FreeTextBox as a replacement for a multi-line text field in ASP.NET, the rich text entered here retains its formatting when cut and inserted into the word.
