Difference between URI and URL

What is the difference between a URI and a URL?

If you read the CodeIgniter or Kohana documentation, there is a lot of confusion about using URIs and URLs. Sometimes they use one and the other time another. They also include a URI class that makes working with URLs easier.

I know that:

  • URI stands for Uniform Resource Identifier
  • URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator

But that doesn't make much sense. What is the difference? or are they the same?
